Declan Coyle

Declan graduated in 2019 with a BA hons degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing. He describes himself as a Contemporary Applied Artist, but his focus more recently has been on Performance Art. Through the MFA he’s examined Performance Art with an in-depth investigation of performance to camera, video installation and live performance. His practice engages with multiply themes exploring place, people, and identity with an emphasis on memory, experience, and shared or hidden histories.

In his practice and in this work there will be a particular concern with language and words, this reliance on language, words, sound, speech, and gesture is evident in his recorded performances and in the street performances he takes part in. Text has an important role to play in his work and recently he has been utilising scripted responses from the performer.  Artists which have influenced his practice include Samuel Beckett, Vito Acconci, Carolee Sheemann and Stuart Brisley among others.

This work will endeavour to engage the viewer with an exploration of the voice, language, and words in a video format with limited visual input so as not to distract from the language. It is a scripted performance focusing on words and expressions to draw the viewer into the scene using varying narratives in a poetic format to engage the viewer and continually shift and redefine the narrative. It is his aim to write intelligently, creatively, and evocatively about what it is like living in this world, our experiences and emotions becoming exposed. A collective witnessing joined in recognition.
